Bishop Museum Announces Its New Exhibit, POW! WOW! The First Decade: From Hawaiʻi to the World

Bishop Museum will present an original exhibition, *POW! WOW! The First Decade: From Hawaiʻi to the World presented by Hawaiian Airlines*, in its Castle Memorial Building and throughout its grounds, from May 15 — September 19, 2021. The exhibition celebrates 10 years of POW! WOW! and will provide a contemporary art experience that bridges culture, creative expression, and indigenous perspectives to showcase some of the most notable street artists and sculptors from Hawaiʻi and around the world.

Since its inception in 2010, POW! WOW! has grown into a global network of artists and organized gallery shows, lecture series, schools for art and music, mural projects, concerts, and live art installations, and has become an integral part of Hawaiʻi's art and urban history. Bishop Museum's partnership with POW! WOW! presents a unique opportunity to activate its galleries and outdoor spaces, making meaningful connections across collections, cultures, time, and place through contemporary art.

Exhibition Highlights

• Murals by visiting artists including Tristan Eaton, Matt Eaton, Cryptik, Greg Mike, Amy Sol, How Nosm, Crash, Hiero Veiga, Detour, Lauren YS, Andrew Schoultz, Aaron De La Cruz, Kevin Lyons, Persue, Apex, and 123Klan.
• Murals by notable Hawaiʻi artists including OG Slick, Hula, Woes, Wooden Wave, Solomon Enos, Carl Pao, Kamea Hadar, and Cory Taum.
• Murals by Native Hawaiian artists including Solomon Enos, Carl Pao, Cory Taum, and Wooden Wave.
• Large-scale originals by Shepard Fairey, Audrey Kawasaki, Defer, Jon Burgerman, Simone Legno of Tokidoki, Brendan Monroe, Evah Fan, Dan Witz, Edwin Ushiro, Mare139, Jay Howell, Tatiana Suarez, and more.
• Installations by Hottea, Spenser Little, Dan Witz, and Slinkachu.

Exhibition Notable Features

• An outdoor street scene recreated within the gallery space, complete with storefronts visitors can walk into including a bodega, tattoo parlor, record shop, and noodle bar. The history of graffiti will be scribed onto the scene's surface with details about the art form from the forefathers of the movement, such as OG Slick, Mare139, and Crash.
• Large-scale murals painted on to the surfaces of select Bishop Museum structures, including the Castle Memorial Building, featuring some of the most notable muralists from around the globe including Tristan Eaton, How Nosm, Lauren YS, Aaron De La Cruz, Andrew Schoultz, 123Klan, Amy Sol, Persue, Cryptik, Hueman, and Apex.
• Featured work from the most renowned Native Hawaiian muralists and artists, including Solomon Enos, Carl Pao, and Wooden Wave.
• Installations both big and small throughout the space including work from Hottea, Slinkachu, Spenser Little, and Dan Witz.
• Over 120, 2x2 original paintings by local and international artists.
• Large, original paintings from Shepard Fairey, Defer, Audrey Kawasaki, Simone Legno of Tokidoki, Jon Burgerman, Edwin Ushiro, and others.

Exihibit curators include Jasper Wong, founder and lead director, with POW! WOW!; as well as Andrew Hosner, owner of Thinkspace Gallery. Exhibit design, fabrication, and installation is led by Bishop Museum's Rachel Filbeck, with creative direction from the POW! WOW! curatorial team.

Bishop Museum Members are invited to preview the exhibition on Friday, May 14, 2021, prior to its public opening. Members are encouraged to reserve their timed General Admission tickets as soon as possible, as tickets are limited to 75 reservations for each entrance hour in observance of capacity limitations. Additionally, on the exhibition's Opening Day, Saturday, May 15, 2021, Bishop Museum will extend access to its Castle Memorial Building and the POW! WOW! exhibition through the evening. To control museum capacity, Bishop Museum offers 500 daily tickets. Tickets must be reserved in advance for one of the following, two time periods:

• Morning, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
• Afternoon, 1-5 p.m.

About POW! WOW!:

The name POW! WOW! was inspired by the color-filled pages of comic books. "POW!" being the impact that art has on a person. And "WOW!" being the reaction that art has on a viewer. Together they form POW! WOW!, (pow wow), which is a Native American term that describes a gathering that celebrates culture, music, and art. It spoke to the core of POW! About Thinkspace:

Andrew Hosner is the co-owner and curator of Thinkspace Projects in Los Angeles, California. Equally an influencer and generator of inputs, he is regarded as one the most important authorities in all things New Contemporary Art. Hosner was the curator of URBAN NATION's Project M/3 in 2014 in Berlin, Germany, and served on their board and collector committee for the first five years of the museum's existence, and remains close with the museum.

Hosner has made it his mission to expose the artists he works with to as many people as possible. With hopes of bringing more acceptance and exposure to the burgeoning New Contemporary movement as a whole, Hosner also curated and ran the annual multi-gallery event Beyond Eden in Los Angeles that attracted over 5,000 patrons over four iterations. Now building with the series of NEXUS events and ongoing traveling LAX series, Hosner is forever pushing Thinkspace's program forward, and fans can count on seeing many more pop-up shows around the world alongside major exhibits coming to life at the institutional level and beyond.
