Bishop Museum Celebrates the Life and Legacy of Edith Kanakaʻole
Bishop Museum and the Edith Kanakaʻole Foundation present a special Bishop Museum After Hours event on June 9 in honor of Edith Kanakaʻole.
Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum and the Edith Kanakaʻole Foundation are proud to present a special After Hours event on Friday, June 9, 2023 that celebrates the hula, choreography, compositions, and traditions of Edith Kanakaʻole.
Edith Kanakaʻole, often referred to as Aunty Edith, was a kumu hula, an entertainer, a Hawaiian language instructor, and the director of a Department of Education project focused on Hawaiian language and culture. She was a respected figure in the community and people from all over Hawaiʻi came to learn from her.
In March 2023, the United States Mint released the Edith Kanakaʻole Quarter as part of the American Women Quarters Program.
Bishop Museum After Hours attendees will enjoy special tribute performances by Hālau o Kekuhi from Hilo, under the direction of Kumu Hula Nālani Kanakaʻole and the Kanakaʻole ʻOhana; performances by Ka Pā Hula Hawaiʻi under the direction of Kumu Hula Kahaʻi Topolinski; Ka Lā ʻŌnohi Mai o Haʻehaʻe under the direction of Nā Kumu Hula Keawe and Traci Lopes; and Hālau Hiʻiakaināmakalehua under the direction of Nā Kumu Hula Robert Keano Kaupu and Lono Padilla.

Bishop Museum's kuleana is to celebrate and perpetuate the culture of Hawaiʻi, which includes highlighting pivotal community leaders like Aunty Edith who dedicated their lives to doing the same," said Taylour Chang, Bishop Museum director of public programs and community engagement. "We invite ʻohana and visitors to join us in what will surely be an incredible night of song, dance, and tribute."
